Program Benefits
California ACEP’s Advocacy Fellowship program is a gateway and training ground for young physicians looking to become active in advocating for their patients and specialty. Fellows have the opportunity to engage themselves in different aspects of legislative, regulatory, or legal advocacy. Together with California ACEP’s Advocacy staff, fellows can design an experience that will both satisfy their personal policy and advocacy interests and perform an important service for emergency care in California.

Program Description
Fellowships last one year and fellows may choose to also apply through the University of California at Davis for experience working at a teaching institute. Often, fellows choose to work at a community hospital in the greater Sacramento area, but can potentially work anywhere in the state. Fellows spend time working both on health policy research and on legislative health policy initiatives. Fellows obtain a first-hand look at how policy is made in California and how to best effectuate the change they want to see. The ultimate goal is to develop a new generation of emergency physician advocates who will lead their specialty in better serving the needs of patients.
In 2018, the California ACEP Board of Directors appointed Carrieann Drenten, MD, FACEP as the Director of the Advocacy Fellowship Program.  As a former Advocacy Fellow, Dr. Drenten is committed to creating an optimal education experience for the fellows.  Dr. Drenten works with the California ACEP staff and lobbyists to design a program to benefit the Fellows and meet the organization’s vision of the Fellowship as a training-ground for future Chapter leadership.

The 2019-20 Advocacy Fellows are Taylor Nichols, MD and David Terca, MD.
